Modeling Caching E ect in Continuous Media

چکیده
Caching is one of the most important schemes for improving the performance of continuous media servers. Continuous object caching enables a server to support more clients simultaneously since it reduces the disk load imposed at each round. But, without a quan-tative analysis of the disk load reduction induced by caching, the caching eeect can not be reeected in the admission control scheme, which limits the number of simultaneous clients serviced. In this paper, we propose a probabilistic model of the caching eeect in a continuous media server. The proposed model divides the disk load reduction induced by caching into disk overhead reduction and block transfer reduction, and models each reduction stochastically to generate the overall reduction model. The proposed model enables the development of a lot of statistical admission control algorithms that can increase the number of clients serviced simultaneously. In this paper, we present a simple example of a statistical admission control algorithm and demonstrate the performance enhancement resulting from caching and the algorithm with an appropriate simulation.

متن کاملCaching Strategies for Continuous - media
Data Caching is widely used to improve the performance of multimedia systems. Even though Several caching schemes have been proposed for multimedia systems, they only try to improve the cache hit ratio. Since the continuous-media servers should guarantee hiccup-free services, a high cache hit ratio alone does not capture the eeectiveness of a caching scheme. We rst show that the conventional mu...

Web proxies and Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) are widely used to accelerate Web content delivery and to conserve Internet bandwidth. These caching agents are highly e ective for static content, which is an important component of all Web-based services. This paper explores the e ect of ubiquitous Web caching on the request patterns seen by other components of an end-to-end content delivery ar...

متن کاملA Proxy Caching Scheme for Continuous Media Streams on the Internet
The Internet has enabled the dissemination and access of vast amounts of information to be easy. But dramatic increases of the number of users of Internet cause server overload, network congestion and client perceived latency. In addition, currently the number of continuous media data such as audio and video is growing rapidly on the Internet. In this paper, we propose a proxy caching scheme th...
